A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Jan. 7-13:

Last year on Jan. 7, 2023: Clark-Willow Lake boys’ coach Jerome Nesheim got his 500th career basketball boys’ and girls’ coaching win in 25 seasons, all at Clark. Nesheim is 413-146 as the boys’ coach, and was 87-38 as the school’s girls’ coach at the beginning of his career.

10 years ago on Jan. 14, 2014: Aberdeen officials Kim Zimmerman and Scott Kusler worked two games in different arenas on the same night in their city. Their college game at the Strode Center on the Presentation College campus ended after 7 p.m., but they made it in time to the Aberdeen Civic Arena for a 7:30 p.m. high school tip- off.

20 years ago on Jan. 10, 2004: The South Dakota High School Activities Association held a forum in Sioux Falls to have a group of panelists talk about diversity and the Native American culture to help foster a better understanding among the various races. Panelists wer veteran coaches Hank Taken Alive of McLaughlin, Doug White Bull of Lower Brule and Bryan Brewer (founder of the Lakota Nation Invitational) of Pine Ridge. Also on the panel were Pine Ridge radio legend Tom Casey and long-time referee Jim
Johnston of Mitchell. Panelists talked about how most reservation children don’t come from traditional families (one senior basketball player was living in his car), the importance of athletics on the reservation, dealing with racism and how to create a better and more comfortable and understanding culture moving forward.

30 years ago on Jan. 7, 1994: Jesse Johnson (23 points), Shawn Burgard (12) and Josh Heupel (10) led Aberdeen Central past Brandon Valley 63-46.

40 years ago on Jan. 9, 1984: Iowa native R.D. “Dewey” Halford, 64, announced he is retiring as the commissioner of the North Central Conference. He has been commissioner since 1977.

50 years ago on Jan. 11, 1974: Northwestern (10-0) remained undefeated with a 72-62 win over host Ipswich. The Wildcats got 18 points from Tom Strube, 13 from Dan Clement, 12 from Don DenHarton and 10 from Keith Brown. Steve Hansman scored 28 for the Tigers.
