A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Jan. 14-20:

Last year on Jan. 17, 2023: Presentation College announced it was shutting down its Aberdeen campus after this summer. The college began in 1922 in Mitchell as Notre Dame Junior College where it operated until 1951 when it moved to Aberdeen as Presentation College. In 1995, PC started athletic programs beginning with basketball. Over the years, the school at different times ran baseball, softball, track, cross country, football, soccer, volleyball and golf programs.

10 years ago on Jan. 20, 2014: Aberdeen native Dan Noble is president and CEO of HKS Architects, the firm designing the new Minnesota Vikings stadium.

20 years ago on Jan. 15, 2004: Hillary White of Aberdeen Central is the South Dakota Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year. White had 430 kills, 188 digs, 35 solo blocks and 21 service aces this season for the Golden Eagles.

30 years ago on Jan. 14, 1994: After Cornelius Askew gave Dakota State a 80-78 lead with his layup with .04 of one second left in overtime, Huron University’s scoreboard clock broke down. About 10 minutes later, Huron’s Phil Dumes caught a floor-length inbounds pass, but missed a buzzer-beating three-point attempt. Huron’s Chris Altenburg hit a three-pointer at the buzzer of regulation to tie the game at 71 and force overtime.

40 years ago on Jan. 20, 1984: Sully Buttes senior Scott Weischedel broke the wrestling state record at for career wins with 149. Vermillion’s Tim Manning had the state record at 146 wins.

50 years ago on Jan. 19, 1974: Former Sioux Falls resident Herschel McGriff, 46, won the nine-turn, 77-lap Permatex 200 in Riverside, CA. Bobby Allison finished second and was the only driver who was on the same lap as McGriff. This was a preliminary to Sunday’s $106,000 Winston Western 500. That race was delayed by rain and was finished on Jan. 26, with Cale Yarborough winning, Richard Petty finishing second, Allison fifth and McGriff 10th.
