A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Jan. 21-27:

Last year on Jan. 21, 2023: Second-ranked Aberdeen Christian (10-0) pulled away from top-ranked White River 87-68 in the 41st annual Hanson Classic at the Mitchell Corn Palace in a match-up of Class B boys’ basketball teams. The winners were led by Malek Wieker (29) and Ethan Russell (23) while White River got 42 points from Joe Sayler.

10 years ago on Jan. 25, 2014: The Wildung family of Minnesota have again proven their athletic domination at the Brown County Fairgrounds on the northwest edge of Aberdeen. Former Late Model national champion auto racer Jeff Wildung has had some memorable wins at Brown County Speedway, and on this night, his goalie son, Brandon Wildung of Minot, beat the Aberdeen Wings at the Odde Ice Center. The race track and hockey rink are next-door neighbors on the fairgrounds.

20 years ago on Jan. 26, 2004: Aberdeen Central outscored Brookings 18-13 in the second overtime to win a 77-72 thriller. Derrick McCauley scored 27 followed by Brian White (18) and Brian Jark (10) for the Golden Eagles. Phil Workman paced Brookings with 29.

30 years ago on Jan. 22, 1994: Derek Miles of the Coyotes won the pole vault with a winning height of 16 feet at the USD Open indoor track meet.

40 years ago on Jan. 21, 1984: Northern State men’s basketball team defeated Winona State 59-58. Mike Peschong made the winning basket with two seconds left in Winona.

50 years ago on Jan. 25, 1974: Larry Enze scored on an 18-foot shot with five seconds left to give Aberdeen Central a 63-61 win over host Mitchell. Steve Mann led the Golden Eagles with 17 points and nine rebounds.
