SELBY – Aberdeen Christian used an early run to fuel a 62-34 non-conference boys’ basketball win over Herreid-Selby Area on Tuesday night.

Aberdeen Christian began the game on a 14-0 run, while Herreid-Selby Area’s first basket did not come until less than two minutes left in the first quarter.

The Knights held an 18-5 advantage after the opening period, but despite the lead, Christian coach Aaron Moeller said it took his team time to settle into the game.

“To be honest, in the first quarter, we started off a little bit slow,” Moeller said. “Once we got rolling, I felt like things kind of went our way.”

The Knights continued to pull away as they built a 39-11 halftime. Moeller said ball good movement contributed to building the first-half lead.

“We made that conscious effort to really work it around, work the ball inside, use our size,” Moeller said. “We stuck with that tonight and got the win from it.”

In the second half, Christian continued to use its size to its advantage as the Knights collected defensive rebounds, which limited scoring opportunities for the Wolverines. Moeller was pleased with the play of his team’s defense.

“We really bought in on that end,” Moeller said. “That’s one thing opposing coaches have complemented us on is the defense, so hopefully it’s a part of the game we can continue to focus on and hang our hat on, so even those nights when the ball isn’t going in the basket for us, we can get some stops.”

Herreid-Selby Area was led by Trevor Gill with 15 points, while Mason Vetter totaled nine. The Wolverines (3-9) travel to Ipswich on Thursday.

Joey Johnson led the Knights with 16 points, while Becker Bosma tallied 15.

The Knights, who evened their record at 4-4 and have now won three straight games, will host Waverly-South Shore on Saturday.

Moeller said the team will need to be prepared for the upcoming matchup.

“(Waverly-South Shore) is going to present some challenges,” Moeller said. “They’re one of the first teams that we’ll face that’s big like we are. They’ve got a lot of size, they play a 2-3 zone, they’re very disciplined in it, so we’re going to have our work cut out for us.”
