BISMARCK, N.D. – The Aberdeen Central girls’ wrestling program will have two wrestlers in action when wrestling resumes today at the Bismarck Rotary Tournament.

Madyson Gillen (112 pounds) and Katrina Gibson (155 pounds) escaped elimination for the Golden Eagles. Gillen’s effort took her to the semifinals before dropping into the consolation bracket, where she will begin Saturday’s action.

Gibson advanced to the quarterfinals before suffering her first setback of the tournament. Gibson rebounded with a win in the consolations, setting up her second-day action.

The remainder of the Golden Eagle contingent, however, was not as fortunate, bowing out of contention before reaching the placing rounds.

“It just seemed like we wrestled slow,” said Central coach Jake Flakus. “We didn’t compete well. … At other tournaments, we were winning the close matches, and this one, we were giving them up.”

Flakus said while the tournament features a lot of quality teams and individuals, it also serves as a reminder for his team that results are earned.

“There’s a lot of really good North Dakota girls up here,” he said, “but at the same time, I think (my girls) should take it personal. It’s a good wakeup call that we can get beat. … They should let it hurt a little bit.”

Despite the lack of placers, the Golden Eagles still managed to rack up 69 points to earn a 12th place standing amongst 31 total teams after the opening day.

Gillen and Gibson will resume their quest for the podium when action picks up this morning.
