BISMARCK – Rayden Zens capped a stellar tournament with a first-place finish and a win over a longtime in-state rival to lead the Aberdeen Central boys’ wrestling team at the Bismarck Rotary Tournament, which wrapped up Saturday afternoon.
Zens, a senior, edged Watertown’s Sloan Johannsen 6-5 in the championship match for the 127-pound title.
“He’s been wrestling really well,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “He’s only getting better from week to week.”
That win highlighted five Golden Eagle wrestlers who ended their weekends with victories. Cole Dunlavy (215) finished fifth, while Ridley Waldo (139), Owen Ward (145) and Ryker Meister (172) won their respective seventh-place matches.
Tate Huff was fourth at 133.
“It’s a bittersweet thing,” Bowden said. “You always want to finish on an odd number, but you’ve got to finish the situation you’re in. That’s what we tried to do this whole tournament.”
Bowden said his squad will look to build consistency going forward. The Golden Eagles head to Yankton Thursday, resuming Eastern South Dakota Conference action with duals against Yankton and Brandon Valley. They’ll conclude the week at the Harrisburg Duals on Saturday.
