Postseason action heats up this week as Class A boys’ basketball teams begin their journeys through regional tournaments hoping to punch their tickets to next week’s SoDak 16.

This year’s Class A tournament will be in Rapid City March 14-16.

Here is a look at three regions in the area:

Region 1A

Tuesday at Groton and Milbank, and highest seeds

Groton is seeking its second state-tournament berth in three years. The Tigers are led by all-state guard Lane Tietz, who is among a host of Groton shooters that can make an impact on any given night. The Tigers have several quality wins, including one over two-time defending state champion Dakota Valley late in the season. The Tigers will be a tough opponent for anyone in Class A.

Milbank is the second seed and has had the hot hand late in the season. The Bulldogs have won their last seven games. Two of their five losses came at the hands of Dell Rapids, both in the same week. Milbank has the size to matchup with just about anyone and has a plethora of players that can score in double figures on any given night.

Tiospa Zina and Waubay-Summit have both put together solid campaigns and will look to contend for a spot in the SoDak 16. The Wambdi are the third seed, while the Mustangs are seeded fourth. Tiospa Zina had won six games in a row, including a win over the Mustangs, before dropping its season finale to Milbank. Waubay-Summit has seven of its last eight contests, with the game against Tiospa Zina being the only defeat.

Aberdeen Roncalli enters as the fifth seed and has won its last three games. The Cavaliers rely on the hot shooting of seniors Keegan Stewart and Maddox Miller to lead the team. The duo has put up several big scoring performances this season, and will look to continue the solid shooting in the postseason.

Hamlin is the top seed in Region 2A and the Chargers have proven throughout the season that they are one of the best teams in Class A. Two of the Chargers three losses came at the hands of the top team in Class A, Sioux Falls Christian, while they also suffered a defeat against Cordova, Tenn. at the Hoop City Classic. Led by senior Tyson Stevenson and junior Easton Neuendorf, the Chargers have the potential to hoist the Class A championship trophy.

Sioux Valley is the second seed and once again boasts another strong team this season. The Cossacks are led by 6-foot-10 center Alec Squires and are poised to make another deep run in the postseason. Sioux Valley’s two losses came in back-to-back contests against De Smet and Hamlin in early February.

Tuesday and Friday at highest seeds

McLaughlin is the top seed in this region, but the Mustangs have struggled a bit during the latter part of the season. They began the season with an 11-2 record before suffering a four-game skid, which began with a loss to Aberdeen Christian at the Sanford Pentagon Heritage Classic. McLaughlin enters region play having won its last three games.

Mobridge-Pollock had a difficult start to the season, but found success during the second half of the campaign. The Tigers have won seven of their last 11 games, but suffered losses in their final three contests. Despite the late-season slump, this team has the talent to give opponents problems in the postseason.
