The postseason begins today in high school girls’ basketball as teams from across South Dakota will compete for trips to the state tournaments in March. A total of 16 teams from Class A will advance out of their respective regions to next week’s SoDak 16, with eight of those winners earning trips to the state tournament. This year’s Class A tournament will be in Brookings March 7-9.

Here is a look at three regions in the area:

Region 1A

Tuesday and Thursday at Sisseton and Roncalli

Sisseton enters region play as the top seed for the second consecutive year. The Redmen held the top spot in the media poll for several weeks, rattling off 14 consecutive wins before dropping a game to third-rated Sioux Falls Christian at the Dak 12/NEC Clash on Feb. 3. The fourth-rated Redmen will be looking to complete yet another trip to the state tournament after finishing in third place there last season.

Aberdeen Roncalli enters the postseason as the second seed after improving from last season’s 10-9 record with a 17-3 mark this year. The Cavaliers began the season 6-0 before dropping a contest to Sisseton. Roncalli, which also lost to Hamlin and Vermillion, and has won its last five games of the regular season. The Cavaliers average 53 points per game on offense, while surrendering just 35.9 points per game defensively. Despite having just one senior on the roster, Roncalli has the talent to make a deep postseason run.

Groton enters as the third seed. The Tigers began the season 3-4, but rattled off eight consecutive wins during the middle portion of the season, including key wins over Great Plains Lutheran and Florence-Henry. Despite its youth, Groton should not be overlooked during postseason play.

Region 2A

Tonight, Tuesday, Thursday at the highest seeds

Flandreau is the number one seed after a perfect 20-0 regular season. The top-rated Fliers are looking to return to the state tournament after a sixth-place finish last season, and are led by a plethora of seniors, including South Dakota State University commit Claire Sheppard. The Fliers have the talent and experience to make a deep postseason run.

Florence-Henry will look to break through to its first state tournament in the history of the co-op as it enters region play as the second seed. The Falcons began the season 10-1 before finishing the year with a 15-5 record. They are led by senior and MSU-Moorhead commit Caylin Kelly. This team has the experience to make a serious run at getting to that first state tourney.

The defending state champion Chargers from Hamlin are the third seed, and despite replacing several key players from last season’s state title run, have the talent to make some noise again this year. The Chargers are led by senior Marissa Bawdon and sophomore Addison Neuendorf and posted a key win over Aberdeen Roncalli in late January to bolster its resume.

Mobridge-Pollock owns key wins over Herreid-Selby Area, Miller, and Groton, and has plenty of momentum entering the postseason.

Miller is the two seed and began the year with an 8-2 record before suffering a four-game skid. The Rustlers have since finished the season 5-1 and head into the postseason on a high note.
