Class B girls’ basketball teams will begin their quest for a trip to Rapid City next month when region tournament action gets underway this evening.

The top two squads in each region will advance to next week’s SoDak 16 where berths to the State B tournament will be on the line. This year’s state tourney will be in Rapid City March 7-9.

Here is a look at three regions in the area:

Region 1B

Tonight, Tuesday and Thursday at highest seeds

Warner is the top seed in this region. The Monarchs began the season on a nine-game winning streak before dropping a contest to Florence-Henry on a last-second shot. They then won nine more games before losing their season finale against Aberdeen Roncalli. Warner, which fell in the SoDak 16 last season, is an experienced team that has the athleticism to cause opponents problems.

After a 2-2 start to the season, Leola-Frederick has since gone 12-4, including a seven- game winning streak during the middle of the season. The Titans have an experienced group that will look to make it back to the SoDak 16, where they fell a year ago.

Northwestern is the third seed and after a rough start to the season, has won seven of its last nine games. The Wildcats seem to have hit their stride as they begin the postseason and could cause problems for foes.

Aberdeen Christian is the eighth seed and will host ninth-seeded Waverly-South Shore tonight. The Knights won a previous matchup by two points.

Region 2B

Tonight, Tuesday, Thursday at Oldham, Arlington, James Valley Christian, Madison

Top-seeded Arlington has put together an impressive season. The fifth-rated Cardinals have dropped just two contests this season, with defeats coming against Flandreau and Ethan (the top-rated teams in Class A and Class B, respectively). The Cardinals have several quality wins including against Florence-Henry, Parkston, Great Plains Lutheran, and James Valley Christian. Arlington is young, with only one senior on the roster, but has the talent to compete with anyone in Class B.

James Valley Christian has put together an impressive late-season push before the postseason begins. The Vikings began the year 2-3, but have since won 11 of their last 14 games. JVC will be a tough out for any opponent.

Castlewood and Wolsey-Wessington, which competed in the state volleyball tournament last fall, both enter region play with identical 7-13 records and will look to pull off upsets during their respective postseason runs.

Region 6B

Tonight, Tuesday, Thursday at highest seeds

Lyman is the top seed in this region and will look to make another deep run this postseason. The Raiders’ two losses have come against fourth-rated Wall and the top ranked team in Class A, Flandreau. Lyman is led by senior Skyler Volmer and 6-foot sophomore Mak Scott.

Faulkton, the number two seed, started the season winning 12 of its first 14 games, but has struggled down the last stretch of the season, finishing the regular season with four losses in its last six contests. While the Trojans certainly have the talent to make a strong postseason run, they will need to make a few adjustments to get back to their winning ways.

Herreid-Selby Area has had an up and down season, and hopes to finish on an upswing during the postseason. The Wolverines will have the size advantage over most teams in the post as they present a pair of 6-footers in senior Jada Rossow and sophomore Jordyn Rossow. With that advantage, Herreid-Selby Area will certainly be a challenge for each competitor it will face.

Sully Buttes and Potter County boast several top individual performers. The Chargers are led by senior all-state guard Stevie Wittler, while the Battlers are led by junior Zoe Meinke nailed 10 3-pointers in in a loss against Herreid-Selby Area last Tuesday, which at the time tied the state record. Both of these teams have the firepower to pull an upset in the region.
