It wasn’t a perfect night, but Aberdeen Central’s 74-0 boys’ wrestling victory over Brookings Thursday night wasn’t far from it.

The Golden Eagles won all 10 contested matches, including six by fall, on the way to the Eastern South Dakota Conference victory in their final home action of the season at Golden Eagles Arena.

“It was a good night,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “We came out here and did what we had to do and got it done.”

The victory capped a solid ESD dual slate for Central.

“We went 7-1 in conference play. It’s been a while since we went 7-1 in conference play,” Bowden said. “I just want to thank everyone that’s been following us, and stick with us for the next three weeks and see what happens.”

Central received pins from Esten Foss, Rayden Zens, Grayden Timm, Mason Schrempp, Ayden Gisi and Bryce Beitelspacher.

Timm said seeing how well his teammates competed motivated him for his match at 150 pounds.

“It makes me hyped,” Timm said. “I’m hyped up to go out there and get another one for the team. The goal is always 84-0, all pins, but it was pretty close to that tonight.”

Timm built a 10-1 lead before finishing off his win by fall late in the second period.

“I was trying to get my tilt, but those weren’t working very well,” Timm said, “so once I got that cradle locked up, it was over.”

Schrempp is working his way back into action following a long layoff from a hand injury. The junior is currently the top-rated Class A wrestler at 157 pounds.

“Rankings are nice,” Schrempp said, “but they don’t mean nothing.”

Schrempp, who lost a one-point decision in the finals at last weekend’s Lee Wolf tourney, dominated his Brookings foe on Thursday.

“I have to move forward from it, but that was a tough loss,” Schrempp said. “So that’s going to motivate me for the rest of the year for sure, because I don’t want to feel that way again.”

Schrempp said his hand feels fine and he is ready for the postseason.

“I feel great,” Schrempp said. “I’ve never been more excited.”

The Eagles now have a break before competing in the state dual tournament on Saturday, Feb. 10 in Brookings. Bowden said the break comes at a good time after a busy stretch of competition.

“We need a break. We’re ready,” Bowden said. “This is going to be a good one to get that mental break, that emotional break, their bodies will come back on Monday, and then it’s postseason now, so we’re in the end game here.”
