A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Feb. 11-17:

Last year on Feb. 16, 2023: The Presentation College men’s basketball team lost its last ever game at the Strode Center to Mayville State 77-70 as the Aberdeen college is shutting down. The Saints were led by Detroit native and senior reserve Travez Nyx (21 points) and Aberdeen’s Jackson Becker (10 points, six rebounds and three steals). PC played its first game at its on-campus Strode Center on Nov. 13, 1998 — three years after PC started its venture into athletics with basketball programs. On that 1998 night, Minnesota-Morris defeated coach Chad Brown’s Saints 71-66. PC was led by Matt Christensen’s 23 points and 22 points from John Hepperle. The building was named after Hepperle’s great aunt and PC supporter, Margaret Rittierodt Strode.

The Presentation College women’s basketball team lost its last ever game at the Strode Center to Mayville State 91-45 as the Aberdeen college is shutting down. PC senior Nek Newell (Newport News, VA) led the Saints with 12 points. The PC women played its first game at the Strode Center on Nov. 14, 1998. On that night, the University of Sioux Falls defeated PC 85-31. On that 1998 night, coach Paul Rozell’s Saints were led by Katie Didier who scored nine points.

10 years ago on Feb. 12, 2014: Aberdeen bowler Jackie Witlock rolled her first career 300 and became only the fourth woman with a 300 in league play in the history of the Village Bowl in Aberdeen. On the next night (Feb.13, 2014) in Groton, Ron Belden of Groton bowled the first 300 at the Jungle Lanes and Lounge since it opened on Main Street Groton in the early 1970s.

20 years ago on Feb. 14, 2004: Webster dominated the lower weights and the District 1B Wrestling Tournament. The Bearcats won the title by almost 150 points, winning titles at 103 pounds (Kyle Bryant); 112 (James Marx); 119 (Rick Schiley); 125 (David Schiley); 130 (Justin McClurg); 135 (Bryce Dargatz); 140 (Jason Munoz); and 171 (Jason Valsvig).

30 years ago on Feb. 12, 1994: Eric Kline scored a school record 52 points to pace Northern State to a 98-80 win over host Minnesota-Duluth. Kline, with 11 three pointers, made 19 of 33 field-goal attempts. Jerry Meyer scored 37 for the Bulldogs. Jerry’s father, Don (1944-2014), later became the coach at NSU.

40 years ago on Feb. 11, 1984: Redfield got 12 points each from Brett Farnham and Jeff From in the Pheasants’ 59-55 win over Britton. Bill Meyer had 15 for Britton.

50 years ago on Feb. 16, 1974: Webster scored 91.5 points to beat defending champion Faulkton (second with 48 points) to win the State B wrestling championship. The Bearcats got state titles from John Schiley (105 pounds) and Dave Grode (126). Dean Neiderbaumer (185) won Faulkton’s lone state title.
