A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Feb. 18-24:

Last year on Feb. 20, 2023: The South Dakota Hockey Hall of Fame, established in 2022, has
announced its first class of 15 members to be inducted April 14, 2023, in Sioux Falls. Honorees are: Aberdeen Wings owners Nancy and Greg Odde; Brookings residents Tom Honkomp, Justin Kirchhevel, Randy Hohkomp and Mike Reger; Pierre residents Landon Badger, Matt Farris and Austin Wagner; Huron residents Tom Hitchcock and Jack Vosler; Mitchell residents Dave Tronnes and Maxine Tronnes; Glenn Cacaro of Sioux Falls; and Dick Novak of Rapid City.

10 years ago on Feb. 20, 2014: Aberdeen Christian used a half-court shot by Matt Rohrbach
to send its boys’ basketball game into overtime where the Knights would beat Warner 67-66. It was the Christian boys’ first win over Warner since the school started a varsity program six years ago.

20 years ago on Feb. 21, 2004: Aaron Busack and Matt Hammer combined for 31 points and 18 rebounds in NSU’s 66-62 win over Minnesota-Duluth. Dustin Hjelmeland added 15 points.

30 years ago on Feb. 19, 1994: An eighth-grader stole the State AA gymnastics show at the Aberdeen Civic Arena. Rapid City Stevens eighth-grader Taylor Baker won the all-around title to lead RCS to the team title. Baker, who started the season playing junior high volleyball and not gymnastics, also won the beam and floor exercise. Coach Sherri Keck credited her Raiders for a team effort, pointing out that all five of Stevens’ athletes on the balance beam had no-fault performances.

40 years ago on Feb. 18, 1984: Redfield defended its State B wrestling championship, winning its third title in five years. Redfield coach Fran Esser had two champions: Mike Ford at 145 and Randy Marlette at 185.

50 years ago on Feb. 23, 1974: With one second left, Greg Farrar of Dakota Wesleyan rebounded a missed free throw and flung it 68 feet, 8 inches to the other end. The shot went in to give Dakota Wesleyan an 82-81 win over Huron College.
