MADISON – Vermillion put an abrupt end to a modest Aberdeen Roncalli win streak Saturday evening, claiming a 75-41 win over the Cavaliers in the Dak XII-NEC girls’ basketball clash in Madison.

The Tanagers, on a modest win streak themselves and fresh off a win over fourth-ranked Sioux Falls Christian, opened Saturday’s contest with a 30-6 lead after the opening quarter.

Roncalli never recovered.

“We did not do a lot of things well,” said Cavaliers’ coach Derek Larson. “It started right from the start. We turned it over, then a foul. I don’t know what percent they shot in the first quarter, but it had to be close to 80.”

While Vermillion did not keep that pace the whole game, it was enough of a lead to put a significant amount of pressure on the Cavaliers.

“We didn’t help ourselves out,” Larson said. “We turned the ball over a lot in the half court, and just didn’t play the way we wanted to play.”

Ava Hanson had 13 points to lead the way for Roncalli. Gabby Thomas came off the bench for 11 points.

Vermillion put four players in double figures, led by Jenaya Cleveland’s 17 points. Taylor Reuvers was close behind with 16, and Kasey Hansen added 15 on five made 3-pointers. As a team, the Tanagers finished with eight threes in the game.

“We have to learn from this and get better from this,” Larson said. “They were just that much better than we were today.”

The Cavaliers (12-3 on the season) will have a chance to do just that, as they head to Miller on Tuesday.
