All-state boys’ basketball teams loaded with area talent

A pair of Northeast Conference point guards headline the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association first team Class A All-State boys’ basketball team, while one of the state’s tallest players tops the first team Class B squad announced today.

Easton Neuendorf of Hamlin and Lane Tietz of Groton are first team members on the Class A team, and 6-foot-9 Castlewood center Bryon Laue is a first team selection on the Class B squad.

Here is a short of each of the area players, followed by the full list of honorees:

Class A

First Team

Easton Neuendorf, Hamlin. Neuendorf had a memorable junior season in helping to lead the Chargers to the Class A State Championship. He set a school record for assists this past season. “Easton led us in scoring along with assists this season,” said Hamlin coach Todd Neuendorf. “He set the tempo on both ends of the floor.”

Lane Tietz, Groton. Tietz orchestrated one of the state’s top offenses from his point-guard position. “We couldn’t be more excited for Lane, like all the other members of the all-state team. He deserves this recognition,” said Groton coach Brian Dolan. “With his drive to be successful, I have no doubts he will have a tremendous career at DSU (Dakota State University).”

Second Team

Hamlin’s Tyson Stevenson (30) goes to the basket as Sioux Falls Christian’s Jude vanDonkersgoed (4) defends in the Class A state championship at Summit Arena at The Monument in Rapid City. Photo by Matt Gade/Rapid City Journal

Tyson Stevenson, Hamlin. “Tyson was our second leading scorer and provided us senior leadership and toughness all season long,” said Chargers coach Todd Neuendorf. Stevenson provided clutch scoring throughout the season for Hamlin. “When we needed a bucket down the stretch, Tyson was our guy,” Neuendorf said.

Third Team

Carvin Fish, Tiospa Zina. “Carvin is a skilled post player.  He can score down low and make the 3-point shot.  He can handle the ball and hit the open man,” said Wambdi coach Cory Grimsrud. “He was double teamed a lot this year and still put up big numbers. His best qualities are being a good leader with strong character, who is there every day putting in the work to improve and help the team.”

Honorable Mention

Trey Maaland, Deuel. “Trey finishes his career as one of the best players to wear a Cardinal uniform. He will be remembered for his work ethic and extra dedication to the game of basketball,” said Deuel coach Jon Pettereins. “This season he led the team in scoring, assists, deflections, steals and second rebounding. He became the fifth player in Cardinal history to score over 1,000 points, is second all time in single-season scoring with 409 points. He set a new Deuel single-game scoring record of 38 points, new season record of 60 made 3-pointers, and was third all time in deflections with 138.”

Class B

First Team

Bryon Laue, Castlewood. “Bryon is a tremendous force on both ends of the floor. He’s very athletic for his size and a good shooter,” said Warriors coach Paul Raasch. “He plays under control and brings a calm confidence each and every game that our guys rely on.”

Second Team

Faulkton’s Layne Cotton, left, brings the ball up the floor during a game this past season at the Aberdeen Civic Arena. Cotton scored 29 points in a win over Leola-Frederick Thursday night. Photo by John Davis taken 1/16/2024

Layne Cotton, Faulkton. “Layne is an unbelievable individual basketball player. He can score at all three levels. He showed that by scoring 25 points per game average his junior and senior years, also averaging over 10 rebounds both years as well,” said Trojans coach Kyle Erdahl. “He set a school record for points in a career with 1,439 and points in a game this year with 52. But what sets Layne ahead of others, in my opinion, is his leadership ability and he is a great team player.”

Lane Tvedt, Castlewood. “Lane is an explosive guard who had a great year,” said Castlewood coach Paul Raasch. “Lane knows how to score and also is a tremendous passer. He was our team leader on and off the court and worked hard to make us a successful team.”

Third Team

Aberdeen Christian’s Joey Johnson, left, moves to the basket as Groton’s Colby Dunker, center, defends during a game this past season at the Groton High School gym. Photo by John Davis taken 2/23/2024

Joey Johnson, Aberdeen Christian. “Joey Johnson was the unquestioned leader and anchor for this year’s team. Not only did he lead our team in scoring (22.3 PPG) and rebounding (9.5), but he was also the peer leader that our young team needed,” said Knights coach Aaron Moeller. “During this season, Joey broke the single game scoring record, scoring 48 points in the game against Hitchcock Tulare and he also set the school’s single season scoring record, scoring 491 points. Lastly, he was a mere eight rebounds from setting the single season rebounding record, recording 207 rebounds.”

Brayden Sumption, Leola-Frederick. “He made our team go. His shooting became lethal for us in the second half of the season and throughout our state tournament games,” said Titans coach Brock Pashen. “Made shots for himself and opened shots for others. The quickest and most dynamic player on the floor throughout the season. Led us in assists. Second leading scorer.”

Trake Cowan, Highmore-Harrold. “Offensively he was our go-to guy. He was doubled and tripled teamed this year and still had success,” said Highmore-Harrold coach Scott Pekarek. “He was a tremendous rebounder both offensively and defensively. On defense he was our anchor. We funneled everything into him and he did a great job affecting shots and grabbing rebounds. Defense was where his vocal leadership was the greatest. Talking to the other guys about screens or cutters. Just being vocal was his biggest asset.”

Honorable Mention

Noah Kippley, Leola-Frederick. “The true definition of a scorer. He could light it up from three or pour it in from midrange,” said Titans coach Brock Pashen. “Was second in rebounding and assists. Led us in scoring and free throw percentage, capable of guarding out on the perimeter and in the post. His game has evolved and improved each year as he has gotten older.”

Wesley Wittler, Sully Buttes. “Wesley is a dynamic scorer, and a great competitor,” said Sully Buttes coach Brian White. “He is in the process of becoming one of the best all-around players in the state, not just one of the best scorers. I am very proud of his accomplishment, and I am very excited to coach him for a few more years.”

Potter County’s Ryder Falkenhagen, center, moves to the basket as Leola-Frederick’s Brayden Sumption, bottom left and Ethan Petrich, right, defend during a Class B SoDak 16 game at Northwestern School in Mellette. Photo by John Davis taken 3/5/2024

Ryder Falkenhagen, Potter County. “Ryder was a great addition. We would have been a different team had he not moved back his sophomore year,” said Battlers coach Bryce Hall. “He brought tremendous competitiveness and work ethic. Will not be easy to replace what he did for our program on and off floor.”
