Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of March 3-9:

Last year on March 7, 2023: Doland native and former NSU assistant coach Tim Miles was named the Mountain West Conference coach of the year. His San Jose State men’s basketball team is having one of its best seasons in program history. A couple of days after picking up the award, Miles and his Spartans earned their 20 th win (first time San Jose team had won that many games since 1980-81) and won their first Mountain West Tournament game since joining the conference in 2013-14.

10 years ago on March 8, 2014: After a Minnesota batboy overslept, the Twins plucked Webster American Legion baseball player Brady Bury out of the crowd to fill in during a spring training game in Florida.

20 years ago on March 8, 2004: Aberdeen won the Junior Varsity Hockey State Tournament in Sioux Falls with a 2-1 win over Watertown. Jeff Deuel and Thomas Schatz each scored goals and Eric Palmer was credited with the assists.

30 years ago on March 5, 1994: Viborg defeated Northwestern in two straight matches to win the State B volleyball tourney. Northwestern had yet to lose in the double-elimination event when the Wildcats entered the championship. Coach Connie Nyhaug’s Vikings were lead by Crystal Nesheim and Cindy Bak while the Wildcats were lead by Nicole Akin.

40 years ago on March 3, 1984: Webster defeated Jefferson to win the State B volleyball championship in Madison. Coach Cindy Nelson’s Bearcats got ace performances from Lori Tompkins, Amy Hews and Vicki Sichmeller.

50 years ago on March 9, 1974: Oakland A’s owner Charley Finley made a Rapid City man an offer he couldn’t refuse. Long-time Oakland second-baseman Dick Green said his injured back feels good, so he was lured out of retirement by Finley for a second time. Green will be paid more than $60,000 for his services this summer, plus fringe benefits, in a big-time MLB contract for its time. Green and his teammates would go on to win Oakland’s third World Series in a row (1972-74).
