Aberdeen Christian will have a different boys’ basketball coach for the fourth time in four years after this past season’s coach Aaron Moeller was informed he will no longer be with the team.
Moeller took over a squad that did not return a single starter from the previous team and overcame a 1-4 start to the season to compile a 15-7 record. The Knights had a 12-game winning streak at one stage.
“I was surprised by the decision,” Moeller said of the school’s decision to go in a different direction. “I felt like holistically we had a really good year.”
Moeller said he did not have any indication the move was coming.
“During the season I didn’t get any feedback that things were going wrong or sideways,” he said.
Aberdeen Christian athletic director Steve Gast said he couldn’t comment on the school’s decision because it was a personnel issue.
Moeller took over the program from Matt Rohrbach, who coached for one season on the heels of his brother, David.
When asked about the prospects of coaching again someday, Moeller responded, “I think if the right opportunity presented itself. I think for right now I’m going to take a break and decompress a little bit.”
Moeller had spent multiple years developing younger Aberdeen Christian players as part of a traveling squad before taking over as the varsity coach this past season.
“I’m really proud of that younger group and what we accomplished. I was coaching travel ball for three years and I felt like that was going to be the really next great group at Aberdeen Christian.” Moeller said. “I think it will be in a couple of years if they can keep it all together. I think that was part of what made this whole thing difficult, is that I really love those kids. I really appreciate the time that I was able to get with them.”
