SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Roncalli overcame a sluggish start, but it wasn’t enough in a pair of dual tennis losses to Sioux Falls Christian and Harrisburg at the Huether Matchpointe Tennis Center on Tuesday.

The Cavaliers dropped to 4-2 on the season falling 9-0 against a pair of state tennis powers.

Roncalli coach Jason Haskell said his players improved as the day went on, but were unable to get on track early.

“Harrisburg and Sioux Falls Christian are both solid clubs. I was most pleased with our singles against SFC,” Haskell said. “After a super early trip departure, we took our sweet time waking up. Many of our matches started out 0-4 or 0-5. To end with respectable scores took some real fight and grit.”

The Cavaliers were able to battle SFC to near even terms after some of those slow starts and Haskell noted that a few deuce points spelled the difference in some matches.

“I was happy to see them buckle down and get some games under their belts against some good competition,” Haskell said. “There were plenty of deuce points. A couple deuce points here or there going the other way and some of those matches could’ve gone either way.”

The Cavaliers lost three matches by 10-6 margins and two others by 10-5 scores.

Roncalli is now off before a busy start to the week next week when the Cavaliers host duals against O’Gorman and Brandon Valley on Monday, before traveling for two more matches on Tuesday against Brookings and Mitchell.

“We finish the week out practicing and then another big week with two big triangulars on Monday and Tuesday,” Haskell said.
