HURON – Aberdeen Central was unable to pull out most of the close matches and dropped a pair of Eastern South Dakota Conference tennis duals on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles fell to Huron 7-2 and were blanked by Mitchell 9-0.

Central lost three of four super-tiebreakers and another match that ended up 6-3, 7-5 after the Eagles had five set points.

“We still have to do a better job of getting over previous points,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz. “We’re letting points affect for us for too long right now.”

Central’s two victories came in singles against Huron where Mason Ligon grabbed a straight-set win at flight two, and Josiah Grandpre won a super breaker 10-8 at flight five.

Ligon, who has seem limited court time this spring, is looking to be more consistent, but got stronger as his match went on.

“We just need him back on the court kind of full-time here to get that consistency down,” Kurtz said. “He played really well. He kind of mixed it up.”

Grandpre overcame a rough start, losing the opening set 6-0, before rallying to pull out his victory.

“The other kid was running away with it and then he just kind of turned the momentum,” Kurtz said, “played really well, was just really consistent, just kept battling.”

Kurtz was pleased with the way his squad played overall against Huron.

“In that Huron match, I didn’t think we played bad at all,” Kurtz said. “I thought we played well at a bunch of flights. … We were pretty good all over place. I did not think we played great in the big points, and tiebreaks.”

Central found the going much tougher against Mitchell, a perennial conference power.

“They’ve been the class of the ESD for the last decade here. … They’re just so deep. The whole lineup from top to bottom is really good,” Kurtz said. “They’re really good in doubles; they always have been. They serve really well.”

Serving is an area that Kurtz said the Eagles need to get better at.

“We did not serve well today. … We just lived on our second serve,” Kurtz said, “and against good teams, it’s tough to consistently win with that.”

The day featured soaring temps, something that eventually got to the Eagles.

“We haven’t seen this kind of heat,” Kurtz said, “and it kind of got to us I think as our day went on.”

Central hosts its home opener on Friday when they host Brandon Valley before taking on Aberdeen Roncalli.
