SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Central began a long week of tennis with setbacks to a pair of quality foes on Monday. Central fell to Sioux Falls Washington 8-1 and lost to Mitchell 9-0.

Mitchell is one of the top teams in the Eastern South Dakota Conference and Washington has a potent top of the lineup, according to Central coach Trent Kurtz.

“Washington one through four is as good as anybody other than Lincoln, probably,” Kurtz said.

The Eagles had chances in several matches, but could not come up with the crucial points.

“We’re not playing the big points well,” Kurtz said.

He said one tight match included a pivotal double fault, and in another match, Central was up a set and a break before losing four straight deuce points.

“We have to be able to play those points better,” Kurtz said. “A lot of it is we just throw away points at love-love or 15-love. … We have to a better job early in the games and not just rely on the deuce points.”

Central’s lone win came at flight five singles where Mika Dannen defeated his opponent from Washington in straight sets.

“He was more consistent. He’s playing well,” Kurtz said. “He’s one of those, he’s getting better with more experience.”

The Eagles have an extremely busy week ahead of them. They will face Sioux Falls Jefferson and Sioux Falls Roosevelt today, return home and then head out to Rapid City for more tennis Thursday through Saturday.
