Golden Eagles have strong start to season at Harrisburg

HARRISBURG – Aberdeen Central came up two tie-breakers short of sweeping titles at the Harrisburg Invitational girls’ golf tournament on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles tied for the team championship, and also had a member tie for the individual crown, but ended up losing both tie-breakers.

It was still a big day for Central, as freshman Kyley Wirebaugh tied for the lowest round of the day with a 75 along with Mitchell’s Allison Meyerink.

“It was a really good day for Kyley,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman. “She had a really good practice the other day. We played nine holes and she had a really good round, and she just kind of carried that over into today. She really played well.”

Teammate Olivia Braun tied for third with a 77, while Emma Dohrer tied for seventh with an 80.

The Golden Eagles had a team total of 327, the same as Watertown.

“Today was kind of where I’m just thinking we need more golf reps,” Zimmerman said. “They hit some good shots, they hit some bad shots, but we just want to be more consistent with our good shots, obviously, and eliminate some of those bad ones.”

Golfers had to deal with less than ideal conditions to start off their season with cool temps and gusty winds.

“Today was a challenge in terms of the weather,” Zimmerman said. “Every girl that played today had to deal with 20-30 mile an hour winds, and a lot higher at times.”

Zimmerman said it was a good starting point to the season and he believes his golfers will be able to lower their scores once they get more practice in as the spring progresses.

“We really haven’t worked on our short game at all, and that’s where a lot of these strokes will come from that you can eliminate,” he said. “That’s going to be a point of emphasis moving forward, is our short game needs to improve as the season goes on and I’m sure it will.”

The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday at the Huron Quadrangular, which will also include Mitchell and Watertown.
