MILBANK – Groton’s Carly Guthmiller won the individual championship at the POET Invitational golf tournament while Aberdeen Roncalli finished runner-up to Madison in the team standings.

Guthmiller fired an 89 to win the medalist honors by three strokes.

Madison finished with a team total of 384, 18 strokes better than Roncalli. Groton was third, 20 strokes behind the Cavaliers.

“It was good to get a meet in. Very windy and cold,” said Roncalli coach Jon Murdy of his team’s first competition of the season. “Had to fight some demons today with that weather.”

Roncalli had three golfers among the top 10, led by Grace Seyer who took third with a 95. Claire Crawford was fifth with a 96, and Reese Henrich was 10th with a 105.

Groton’s Carlee Johnson finished seventh with a 100.

Ava Danielson shot a 106, Mackenzie Wegehaupt a 110, and Morgan Helms a 114.

“Very happy with how Mackenzie played. Tough playing in your first high school meet with those conditions,” Murdy said. “Reese play really well today.”

The Cavaliers compete in the Redfield Invitational on Thursday. Murdy hopes that Tuesday’s event will serve as a spring board for the rest of the season.

“Hopefully, it will be a confidence boost going forward for the season,” Murdy said. “The whole team knows they left many shots out there, but for the first meet and for some their first 18 holes, very happy with results today.”
