Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 7-13:

Last year on April 9, 2023: It was a big week for Texas A&M star golfer Sam Bennett and his caddie/coach Brian Kortan. As an amateur, Bennett finished tied for 16 th (2 under 286) in the Master’s. Texas A&M coach Kortan is a Yankton native who won the 1987 State A golf championship and led his Bucks to the high school team title that year. Bennett, who won the U.S. Amateur national title in 2022 with Kortan tending his bag, was in contention for the Masters’ title for the first three days. He and his coach as caddie made a lot of national headlines during Masters week as Bennett was in third place after two rounds and played the third round with eventual champion Jon Rahm and runner-up Brooks Koepka. Kortan was a pro golfer for 16 years, playing on a variety of levels, including the PGA, Nationwide and Dakotas (which brought him to Aberdeen) tours.

10 years ago on April 10, 2014: Aberdeen bowlers Terry Ford and John Ryan bowled 300 games on side-by- side lanes.

20 years ago on April 10, 2004: Several northeast South Dakota athletes won titles at the prestigious NCAA DII Track and Field Challenge in Emporia, KS. NDSU’s Melinda Zirbel (Summit) won the 5,000 meters; USD’s Sam Pribyl (Webster) won the pole vault; SDSU’s Jeremy VanVeen (Milbank) won the 5,000 meters; and NSU’s Micah Arnold won the 110-meter hurdles.

30 years ago on April 9, 1994: Former Pine Ridge basketball standout Eddie Lau scored a North Carolina high school record 70 points to propel his First Assembly Christian of Concord (NC) team to victory. Lau was featured in Sports Illustrated for his feat.

40 years ago on April 7, 1984: In-state college rivalries heated up in Brookings in a baseball doubleheader against Augustana. SDSU got an early 5-0 lead, and when it looked like rains might stop the game, the Jacks began taking intentional outs to move the game along. Augie protested and in the third inning, umpires called the game in favor of SDSU because of illegal delaying tactics by Augie. The rains held off and when the second game was scheduled to start, Augie was on its way home. SDSU was declared the winner via forfeit.

50 years ago on April 10, 1974: Cresbard native Bob Swanhorst has coached one of the best South Dakota college teams the past two seasons. Led by 6-foot-7 McHenry (IL) native Jim Heard (776 points in 29 games this season), Huron has gone 40-16 in the past two seasons.
