SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Roncalli made it a clean sweep of the tennis weekend with a 6-3 win over Lennox on Saturday morning.

The victory capped a series of wins over Madison, Vermillion, Spearfish, St. Thomas More and Lennox during a three-day period.

“Coming home from Sioux Falls 5-0 was an amazing feeling,” said Roncalli coach Jason Haskell. “I knew STM and Lennox would not go down without a fight and my boys proved they were ready for it.”

Haskell said the Cavaliers are learning to focus on the positives in the matches instead of the negatives.

“Sometimes in tennis you can construct a great point, put six or seven great shots in a row and then we tend to focus on the shot that lost a point,” Haskell said. “Sometimes an opponent just hits a better shot or you go for a winner and clip the tape. But before all that there was seven great shots.”

The Cavaliers received singles victories from Palmer Johnson at second flight, Gannon May at third flight, Jayden Reecy at fifth flight, and Ezra Feickert at sixth flight.

While Roncalli lost a pair of tiebreakers in singles, they won two tiebreakers in a pair of doubles victories. Cason Hellwig and Landon Zikmund teamed for a win at flight two doubles, and Reecy and Will Haskell scored a victory at flight three doubles.

“We need these tough matches with good competition to force us to perform under pressure,” Coach Haskell said. “We did that this weekend. Performance under pressure.”

Roncalli has another full week of tennis coming up. The Cavaliers face Aberdeen Central at 2 p.m. Monday at the Northern State Courts, and then head to Pierre for a tourney at the end of the week.

“We are really starting to play some of our best tennis at the best time of the year,” Coach Haskell said. “We need to just dig in, keep striving to get better, and keep taking care of the controllables. Win, lose or draw, if we do that, we will be in a good place at the end of the day.”
