MITCHELL – Aberdeen Roncalli fell to Mitchell 8-1 before taking down Brookings 7-2 in a tennis triangular on Tuesday.

The Cavaliers, who played without top player Cason Hellwig due to an injury, were involved in numerous close matches against Mitchell. Three of the six singles matches were decided in super-tiebreakers.

“We had a slow start against Mitchell, but once we got our feet under us, we had competitive matches all up and down the lineup,” said Roncalli coach Jason Haskell.

Roncalli’s lone victory against the Kernels came at flight four singles where Landon Zikmund edged his foe 10-6 in a super breaker.

“Will Haskell was bumped up to number one singles due to Cason’s injury,” Coach Haskell said. “Another week or so like that and we should be back to full strength.”

The Cavaliers won four singles matches against Brookings and swept the doubles competition. All were straight-set matches with the exception of flight three doubles where Jayden Reecy and Will Haskell won 10-7 in a super.

“We have been working hard on not beating ourselves and incorporating variety in our games,” Coach Haskell said. “I felt like that really started to blossom against Brookings. We showed good patience and variety. It showed in our scores as well. I’m super proud of the kids.”

Roncalli was able to get in a lot of sub-varsity matches on the day.

“We got a good number of JV matches in also,” Coach Haskell said. “It was nice to get some of those younger kids out on the courts in some competition.”

The Cavaliers return to action next week with a full schedule of duals. Roncalli has a triangular with Watertown and Sioux Falls Roosevelt in Watertown on Monday, a triangular with Huron and Milbank at Milbank on Tuesday, and then their home opener on Friday with a rescheduled match against Brandon Valley at 1 p.m., before taking on Aberdeen Central at 4 p.m.

“Back to practice for the rest of the week,” Coach Haskell said, “and a big week ahead of us next week.”
