SIOUX FALLS – Relay squads from across the area turned in big performances Saturday at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls.

The Ipswich boys won a pair of relays in the Class B division. The Tigers captured the 400-meter relay as well as the 800-meter relay.

Aberdeen Christian finished third in Class B 400-meter relay. The squad of Shawnteah La Croix, Ali Isakson, Payton Skarin and Ella Ellyson stepped off the distance in a time of 52.30 seconds.

The Potter County girls also had a pair of solid races. The Battlers finished second in the Class B 1,600-meter relay and third in the Class B sprint medley relay.

The Northwestern boys finished second in the Class B sprint medley relay, and Tri-State was third in the Class A medley.

In Class AA action, the Aberdeen Central boys keep improving in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

“Our 300 hurdlers really had a good day,” said Central boys’ coach Greg Murley. “They all PR’d by about a half a second. They really did a nice job of getting some things done there.”

The Golden Eagles also competed in the 400-meter relay. Murley said the squad has the ability to cut some time off in that event.

“We need to do a better job in practice, both the coaches and athletes, in focusing on our handoffs, and that’s something we talked about after the meet,” Murley said. “We’re not very crisp for this time of year and we’re going to get better at that.”

On the girls’ side, Central received a big effort from Breckan Santjer in the pole vault who finished with a personal record.

“Breckan Santjer had a great pole vault day,” said Central girls’ coach Jim Appl, “clearing 10 feet, 3 inches without a miss.”

The Golden Eagles will now spend the upcoming week gearing up for the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet Saturday in Watertown.

“We’re excited for next week’s ESD,” Appl said.

Central was also involved in a new portion of the Howard Wood this year.

“We did a pretty cool thing with the Special Olympics this year,” Murley said. “That was pretty cool. We really enjoyed having them with us.”
