WEBSTER – It turned out to be a record-setting day at the Webster Invitational on Thursday.

Nobody had a bigger performance than Kaleb Foltz of Tri-State, who clocked the fourth fastest time in state history in the 800-meter run. The senior covered the distance in a time of 1:52.24.

It was also memorable day for a group of Aberdeen Roncalli runners. The foursome of Aidan Fisher, Paul Gutenkauf, Parker Grieben, and Joe Perkins set a new school record in the sprint medley relay. The squad clocked a time of 3:39.87.

Roncalli coach Brady Lesnar said prior coaches Terry Dosch and Mark Stone were talking after the accomplishment.

“They said they’ve been fortunate to have lots and lots of really good runners over the years, and to see kids break records of those kids, great runners from the past, that says a lot about how talented those guys are, too,” Lesnar said. “To be up there with those guys is a really cool thing to do.”

Lesnar said the runners were focused on the task at hand on the way to establishing a new school mark.

“They ran the way they needed to run to do what they did,” Lesnar said.

Grieben also won the 110-meter high hurdles in a time of 15.69 seconds.

The Roncalli boys also received a first-place finish from Beau Price in the pole vault.

In the girls’ division, the Cavaliers won the 1,600-meter relay in a time of 4:17.88. That team was comprised of Addison Cassady, Hazel Kannegieter, Sarah Schmidt and Paige Schmidt.

The team had been just outside of the top 24, which is the cutoff for qualifying for the state meet.

“They were sitting 26-27. I think they were 24-25 on Monday and it got knocked out within a couple of minutes. … Hopefully, that time stays now,” Lesnar said. “Hazel and Addy and Paige and Sarah, they all ran some of their best times, and their medley rocked, too.”

Webster’s Matthew Mount won the shot put, discus and javelin, while Groton’s McKenna Tietz won the 200-meter dash, 300-meter intermediate hurdles, and ran on the winning 400-meter relay squad.

With today being the final day to obtain a spot in the state meet, Roncalli is taking a handful of kids to a meet in Mobridge for one last chance to qualify. It will mark the fourth meet of the week for some of the athletes.

“This week has turned into a mad week. We gave them the option to compete one more time,” Lesnar said.

He noted that there has been more meets this week alone than there had been all month.

“That’s just what it’s come to, get the kids in. We don’t want to waste any opportunities,” Lesnar said. “We had three meets in May. We had more this week than we did in the month of May.”
