PIERRE – Aberdeen Roncalli had its five match winning streak snapped before bouncing back for a win during the opening day of a two-day tennis event in Pierre Thursday.

The Cavaliers fell to Class A power Rapid City Christian 8-1, and then stopped Pierre 7-2.

“The 8-1 loss to Rapid City Christian was not indicative of the level of play,” said Roncalli coach Jason Haskell. “A lot of great tennis was played in the matchup with RCC. So to come right back with no rest and play Pierre as well as we did was very nice to see.”

Roncalli won four of the six singles matches and swept the doubles against the Governors. The dual featured two tiebreakers and a couple of other tight matches.

“Pierre is a very good team as well and we had to work hard at every flight to earn out 7-2 victory,” Haskell said.

Jayden Reecy scored the lone win against Rapid City Christian and also defeated his Pierre opponent.

“I’ve been working on getting the kids to get courageous and go for shots,” Haskell said. “Jayden finally found his groove and swung out. It was great to see him play free and go for stuff. That was a big win for him against RCC.”

The Cavaliers are right back in action today.

“Looking forward to a tournament style play (Friday),” Haskell said.
