YANKTON – Aberdeen Central placed three golfers among the top six places on the way to a runner-up finish in team points at the Yankton Quadrangular golf tournament at Fox Run Golf Course on Monday.

Mitchell edged the Golden Eagles by four strokes led by medalist Allison Meyerink with a 74. Central’s Olivia Braun was second with a 75, while Kyley Wirebaugh tied for third with a 79. Emma Dohrer with sixth with an 81.

The Eagles, who had a team total of 326, will be right back on the same course Thursday for the Eastern South Dakota Conference Tournament.

Central coach Kim Zimmerman said there weren’t too many surprises on the day.

“A couple of things that I took away from today is one, you get more familiar with the golf course that you’re playing Thursday, obviously,” he said, “and number two, is maybe have a little bit of an idea to what you’re going to need to do Thursday for a team score to compete for a championship.”

That said, Zimmerman believes that teams will need to drop their scores a bit in order to win the ESD title.

“Today wasn’t where we want to be,” Zimmerman said, “but we’re close and I guess that’s all you can ask.”

Interestingly enough, Monday’s event was the second of four in Yankton this spring for the Eagles, with two more coming within the next two weeks as conference is on Thursday, and the Class AA State Tournament is June 3-4.

“Unfortunately, it’s a little long,” Zimmerman said of the distance to Yankton. “It doesn’t matter which way you go, it’s just a long trip. … It doesn’t happen very often where ESD and state are in the same town on the same year, but this year is an exception.”

Team Points: Mitchell 322, Aberdeen Central 326, Yankton 384, Brandon Valley 385.
