Central drops three duals at Brookings Quad

HURON – Aberdeen Central won some battles Saturday, but ultimately lost the war during the Brookings Quadrangular tennis event.

The Golden Eagles were edged by Brookings 5-4, blanked by Yankton 9-0, and then fell to Huron 7-2.

Once again, deuce points proved to be a big factor in Central’s results as the Eagles lost three super-tiebreakers on the day and also had another match where they lost four straight deuce points during their service games.

“We just have to play the big points better,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz. “The difference is so small between winning and losing when you’re playing no-ad tennis where one point wins the game.”

Still, there were bright spots for the Eagles.

Brock Anderson got his first varsity action in doubles and teamed up with Dawson Pederson. The third flight tandem finished the day strong and “played really well and beat a Huron team who beat us earlier in the year,” Kurtz said, “so happy with what I saw out of three doubles there.”

Central also received major contributions from Aric Tennant, who won a pair of singles matches and a doubles match on the day.

“Aric Tennant had a good day. He subbed in at one doubles for a match today and got a good win against Brookings. Him and AJ played really well,” Kurtz said. “And then Aric had a big singles win right at the end of the day, one of the last matches on the court. He beat a Huron kid that had beat him early in the year.”

The Eagles had not played for 12 days and Kurtz said his players felt it throughout the busy day of tennis.

“We wore out a little bit today. It’s a tough day,” Kurtz said. “We played six matches and it’s not much rest in between matches, so it’s definitely a tough day.”

Central has a busy week of tennis ahead. The Eagles play in the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament Monday and Tuesday in Sioux Falls, travel to Watertown for a triangular on Thursday, and then have their only home matches of the season when they host Brandon Valley and O’Gorman on Friday.
