MITCHELL – Aberdeen Central overcame a rough start to take second place at the Mitchell Invitational golf tournament on Friday.
Mitchell, which had the top three golfers in the event, won the team title by 12 strokes over the Golden Eagles. Quinn Dannenbring won a playoff hole to earn medalist honors.
Central had three golfers among the top seven as Olivia Braun finished fourth with an 80, Kyley Wirebaugh was fifth with an 81, and Emma Dohrer was seventh with an 82.
However, the Eagles had a less than stellar start to their day.
“It was kind of frustrating the way we started today,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman, noting all of Central’s golfers had a tough time. “I think we were like 20 over in the first six holes. We started out with a lot of doubles.”
The encouraging thing is that for the most part, the Eagles were able to right the ship on the back nine.
“They came back after kind of a tough start, and kind of plateaued a little bit,” Zimmerman said. “They got something out of their round I think at least.”
However, the squad was unable to make a dent against the Kernels on their home course after they built a 13-stroke lead to start the tournament.
“When you get yourself that far down against a team like Mitchell on their home course, that’s really tough,” Zimmerman said. “I know strange things can happen, but they’re just too good to spot them that many strokes on their home course.”
Central is back in action next week playing at tournaments in Watertown on Tuesday and at Brookings on Thursday.
