YANKTON – The roller-coaster ride that is Aberdeen Central vs. Mitchell, finished at the top this time around for the Golden Eagles.

Central edged Mitchell at the finish to win the team championship by five strokes, after trailing by three with just a few holes left. Olivia Braun earned medalist honors for the third straight tourney.

The Eagles ended up putting three golfers in the top five. Braun shot a 76, Emma Dohrer was third with a 79, and Kyley Wirebaugh was fifth with an 82.

“It was gratifying in more than one way today,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman. “One, we had an individual medalist today; two, we won the team event; and three, we’re playing on a state tournament course. I think a lot of positives came out of the day.”

The Central-Mitchell battle has been on-going from day one this season. The two sides have traded titles with the other one second in most events. The Golden Eagles had a double-digit lead on Friday, lost it, yet ended up winning the team crown at the end.

“I think reality is kind of setting in,” Zimmerman said of his players. “One of the girls mentioned that this is really happening. Every meet is 300-and-some strokes, and it’s going to come down to one or two.”

The one constant through everything has been the play of Braun, who continues to have a stellar spring.

“She’s rock solid. She’s just very consistent,” Zimmerman said. “She has a good short game. She putted well again, today. … I’m glad for her, because she’s put a lot of time and effort into her game.”

Dohrer and Wirebaugh have also been among the top players just about every time out.

“Can’t say enough about our top three,” Zimmerman said. “Without a doubt, it’s no secret they’re carrying us. Not only do you get those in the top 5 or 10, but they’re not too far apart lately.”

The Eagles will now get a week off to enjoy their most recent win and gear up for a tournament in Mitchell on Friday.

“We just want to keep the momentum going,” Zimmerman said.
