A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of May 19-25:
Last year on May 21, 2023: A 70-year-old South Dakotan from Junius (near Madison) started his 51st season of dirt-track racing at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon. Sprint car driver Chuck McGillivray has raced all over the state for the last half century.
10 years ago on May 20, 2014: The Aberdeen Christian boys’ golf team won the State B title, the Knights’ first state championship in any sport in school history.
20 years ago on May 20, 2004: NSU head softball coach and assistant women’s basketball coach Angie Eliason is resigning at the end of the month as she plans to pursue a law degree.
30 years ago on May 20, 1994: On March 8, SDSU baseball pitcher Trevor Schulte lost to Central Missouri. For the next two seasons, Schulte would not lose again — winning an NCAA DII record 22 games in a row — until today, when the Jacks lost to Central Missouri in the region finals. Schulte helped the Jacks to 78 wins in those two seasons where he had 172 strikeouts in 166.1 innings pitched. The All-American ended his career (1991-94) with a 26-5 record and was a two-time North Central Conference pitcher of the year.
40 years ago on May 19, 1984: Mori Emmons of Sioux Falls pitched 12 innings of relief as her Nebraska Cornhuskers defeated Oklahoma State 3-2 in 18 innings in the women’s softball NCAA DI regional. Emmons has given up only one earned run in her last 58 innings.
50 years ago on May 25, 1974: For the third year in a row, coach Burt Elliott and his Aberdeen Central boys won the tennis state title. Leading the charge for the Golden Eagles were their doubles state champions Bruce Mannes and Don Boyd. In singles, Mike Trautner of Pierre defeated Mannes for the first flight singles state title while Boyd won the second flight singles state title.
