Peterson, Simon grab Lake Region Conference titles

A pair of Ipswich golfers used mental toughness to overcome tough conditions Thursday at Rolling Hills Golf Club.

Chet Peterson and Mollie Simon battled rain and wind to earn medalist honors during the Lake Region Conference golf tournament on Thursday.

Ipswich won the boys’ team title, while Faulkton topped the girls’ field.

It was the first LRC crowns for both Peterson and Simon. Both said having the proper mindset played a key in their rounds.

“Just play my game and try not to let the weather affect me,” Peterson said of the key to his round.

The senior said the worst part was the combination of the elements.

“Probably when it was windy and it was raining at the same time,” Peterson said, “that was probably the worst.”

Simon also tried to block out the distractions and focus on the task at hand.

“You just have to have a good mindset and keep moving on,” Simon said. “You can’t really focus on that one bad shot and you just have to keep going.”

Interestingly, both golfers said they try not to think about other people’s scores in relation to their own.

“I don’t really look at the scores,” Simon said. “I don’t want to overthink stuff.”

Peterson has the same mindset when he is out on the course.

“I just try not to think about it,” Peterson said. “It just makes me overthink.”

Peterson has his sights focused on a big finish to his prep career.

“Hopefully, to get top five in the region,” he said, “and then hopefully top five in the state, too.”

Simon, just a freshman, came close to getting to state last year and would like to qualify this spring.

“I was one stroke off,” she said, “and it really got to me.”

Aberdeen Christian had two golfers compete in the event. Ellis Russell shot a 95 and Becker Bosma finished with a 99.

“I thought Ellis did a really nice job,” said Knights coach Tyler Pridey. “He kept it under 50 (on each nine holes), same with Becker. Anytime you keep it under 50 when it’s cold out, you can barely feel your hands.”

Russell said the wet conditions definitely took a toll as the day wore on.

“It was definitely really tough with the rain, because you lose your grip,” Russell said. “A kid in my group even, his club flew out of his hand when he swung so, I mean it’s definitely tough, and then the waiting between holes, because of the group in front of you, is hard too, just sitting there just letting the rain hit you.”

Russell, who estimated that golf is 80 percent mental, said having the right mindset is crucial when it comes to the sport.

“You kind of just have to have a next shot mentality on everything,” he said, “you can’t get too up and can’t get too down on any shot.”

Pridey said the Knights have only been outside about a handful of times for practice because of the weather.

That said, he was pleased with the rounds of his two golfers on Thursday.

“They went out there, giving it their best shot,” Pridey said.

Christian will compete in the James Valley Christian Invitational on Tuesday in Huron.
