SISSETON – Aberdeen Roncalli won five events on the way to claiming the boys’ team title, while the Groton girls also topped five events en route to winning the girls’ team crown during the Sisseton Twilight track and field meet on Friday.

“We had some really good competition today,” said Roncalli coach Brady Lesnar. “I thought our kids competed really well. It was cold and rainy all day.”

While the conditions were less than ideal, the Cavaliers hadn’t been able to compete in more than a week.

“We had a little team meeting before we started heading out to our different events and just said, ‘Hey, we’re limited on opportunities and we can’t waste them.’ We’re fortunate that our kids showed up and competed well,” Lesnar said.

Roncalli’s Parker Grieben swept the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, while teammate Joe Perkins won the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs, and also ran on the Cavaliers winning 3,200-meter relay squad.

Perhaps the biggest event for Roncalli in both divisions was the pole vault.

“Pole vaulters came to play,” Lesnar said.

On the boys’ side, Roncalli had three of the top five finishes, with Beau Price second, Matthew Peterson fourth, and Isaac Price fifth.

On the girls’ side, the Cavaliers saw major improvement from Mataya Henrich, Elizabeth Jensen and Anna Mitzel.

“They had a great meet,” Lesnar said. “Mataya, Lizzie, and Anna, all hit either season bests or PR’s.”
