A pair of drivers who were unable to finish off last week’s races because of the rain, took advantage of their second chances on Friday night at Brown County Speedway, Aberdeen.

Todd Stark of Watertown won the makeup feature in the Midwest Modified division. Stark has been racing on and off since 2000, and won his first feature at BCS since 2016.

“This year we upgraded some equipment,” Stark said, “and I’ve got to thank the car owners for trusting me that I can still get it done after all them years.”

Stark, who plans to win more features in the near future, was happy he got the first one out of the way on Friday.

“This was great. I didn’t want to wait until the end of the year to get one,” Stark said. “I wanted to get one under my belt, so the stress level is a little less.”

He said the car played a key role in his feature victory.

“The biggest thing is getting the car to where you like it,” Stark said. “The next guy that gets in it probably couldn’t drive it. He’d probably say it’s junk. You’ve got to get comfortable and have faith in it. When you believe in the car you’re going to go faster.”

Aberdeen’s Kent Arment likes the way his Late Model car is working this summer.

“The car was super fast,” Arment said. “It’s been really good this year, and it finally paid off, that’s for sure.”

Arment sailed around the high side of the track, although he did spend a brief time on the bottom of the oval.

“I run the bottom for a couple laps. I wasn’t sure,” Arment said. “I probably should have ripped it around the rim earlier.”

After being on the pole position in last week’s feature only to have it rained out, Arment took advantage of his pole starting spot to win the feature this week.

“We had a good starting spot for sure, there’s no doubt on a night like tonight,” Arment said. “You’ve got to win the ones you’re supposed to and hopefully get some that you’re not supposed to win.”

Stewart Schipke of Aberdeen was able to grab one of those wins he probably didn’t think he would. He was not even among the top three drivers late in the Super Stock feature, before one leader went over the top and the other two collided with each other leaving a lane open for Schipke.

“Those guys collided with each other and I just split them, basically and got on the high side,” Schipke said. “Actually, the high side, I couldn’t really hit it as hard as I wanted to with them in front of me, because I would have to slow up.”

Schipke knew he was running out of time, but caught a huge break when the leaders had some misfortune.

“They all lost it,” Schipke said. “I just got lucky, I believe.”

Still, as he pointed out, you still have to be in position to take advantage of those opportunities.

“Hey, you’ve got to be there at the end to finish it,” Schipke said.

Schipke, who has been racing for nearly 30 years, said he couldn’t recall a win quite like that.

“I really should remember that one,” he said.

While the high side of the track was the place to run, it can also be a bit risky as multiple cars flew over the edge throughout the evening.

Watertown’s Cayden Schmeling came close to leaving the high-banked oval, but was able to keep things under control on the way to a win in the Modified feature.

“I’m not going to say there wasn’t times there I was close. I was up in the tulips there for a second,” Schmeling said. “It’s hard to do. It’s a big cushion. It’s hard to run and be consistent around there. If you hit it perfect, it kind of does it for you.”

For the second week in a row, Goodwin’s Maria Broksieck just missed winning the Street Stock feature. Last week Broksieck led until the very end, before being edged out by .027 of a second. Friday night, Broksieck ran second and was gaining ground on eventual race winner Michael Bogh of Huron, and lost by .105 seconds.

Bath’s Taylor Schmidt won the regularly scheduled Midwest Modified feature.

Racing continues at 7 p.m. Friday.
