A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of June 16-22:

Last year on June 16, 2023: Street Stock racer Jodie Michaelsohn of Aberdeen earned his first feature win on his home track in 11 years. In the feature at Brown County Speedway, Michaelsohn got his first lead only a few feet from the checkered flag when he slipped past Maria Broksieck of Goodwin.

10 years ago on June 21, 2014: Veteran Sioux Falls 330-pound defensive tackle Cory Johnsen of Aberdeen scored two one-yard touchdowns in his team’s 73-36 win Saturday over the Cedar Rapids Titans to help the Storm advance to the Indoor Football League championship.

20 years ago on June 18, 2004: A quartet of Rapid City Steven runners broke an all-time South Dakota high school track record 1,721 miles from home. The team of Betsy Blackler, Samee Pagel, Shannon Hattervig and Julie Schwengler ran a 9:09.73 to finish fourth at the Adidas Outdoor National Track Meet in Raleigh, N.C.

30 years ago on June 16, 1994: Former Aberdeen Central assistant coach Lana Anderson has been hired as the head coach of gymnastics at Sioux Falls O’Gorman.

40 years ago on June 16, 1984: Randy Fischer of Sioux Falls finished 15th in the prestigious Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth. His time was 2:23.05.

50 years ago on June 22, 1974: Former Sioux Falls Washington standout athlete Buddy Edelen has the nation’s fifth best time (2 hours, 14 minutes, 28 seconds) in the marathon. The leader is Frank Shorter (2:10.30). Edelen competed in the 1964 Olympics and was the first American to ever run a marathon under 2:20.0.
