A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of June 23-29:
Last year on June 25, 2023: A father and son accomplished a rare feat in South Dakota amateur baseball as each hit home runs in the same game. Brent Osborn and his son Bennett led Redfield Dairy Queen to a 17-5 win over Northville. Brent had a solo homer and a single while Bennett went 5-for-5 (2 homers, 2 doubles and a single) with five RBIs and four runs scored.
10 years ago on June 26, 2014: Despite being out-hit on the night 16-11 in the two games, the Aberdeen Smittys swept an American Legion doubleheader from Huron 12-2 and 4-3. All 11 of Aberdeen’s hits were singles. Huron committed nine errors in the first game, while walking walking seven batters and hitting two more in the second.
20 years ago on June 29, 2004: SDSU men’s basketball coach Scott Nagy said — as expected — scheduling for the Jacks’ first DI season has been hard. The Jackrabbits will open the 2004-05 season with seven of their first nine games on the road, playing in seven different states.
30 years ago on June 25, 1994: The school with the largest representation at the AAU State Track and Field Meet in Beresford? Mobridge featured a team of 62 as athletes from across the state between ages 7 and 18 competed in 34 events. Mobridge coach Terry Binger said his team chartered two buses for the 300-mile trip to Beresford.
40 years ago on June 23, 1984: Onaka native and Faulkton graduate Frank Chamberlin was one of USD’s best tennis players in history and is in the Coyote Hall of Fame. Now, the 1939 USD grad who lives in Paso Robles (CA) has established an endowment fund to provide tennis scholarships for future Coyote players.
