Smittys continue offensive onslaught in sweep over Renner

The streaks showed no signs of slowing down Tuesday evening at Fossum Field.

The Aberdeen Smittys extended their winning streak to eight games, and their run total during that stretch to 115 on the way to a 13-2 and 20-5 American Legion baseball doubleheader sweep over Renner.

“They’ve been taking the cover off the ball, and it’s top and bottom throughout the lineup,” Smittys coach Nathan Gonnelly. “Our one guy can bat just as well as our four, our four-seven, seven-nine. It’s just up and down the lineup the guys can tear the cover off the ball.”

While Aberdeen has faced a few squads lately that have sub .500 records, that fact of the matter is, the Smittys have dominated most of that competition.

“Eight wins in baseball, no matter who it’s against, is still big. You still have to get up there every at bat and hit the ball, you still have to throw strikes every game,” said Aberdeen’s Zane Backous. “You know there was a stretch when the Twins won 11 in a row, granted they were playing the White Sox … and everybody is like it’s just the competition, but you still have to go out there and win that many games in a row. You still have to put good ABs together and throw strikes. You just have to play well as a team together and we’ve done that.”

For the most part, the Smittys have played small ball, piecing together numerous singles and taking advantage of walks. However, there have been extra-base hits as well.

Against Renner, Drew Salfrank had a pair of doubles and knocked in three runs in the first game.

“Everyone’s hot right now,” Salfrank said. “Everyone’s seeing the ball well, smoking baseballs.”

Salfrank has patiently waited for his pitch and when he gets it, he hasn’t missed it.

“I’m just looking for my pitch and once I see my pitch, I’ve got to swing as hard as I can and hope something good happens,” Salfrank said.

As a member of the Northern State track and field squad this spring, Salfrank got a bit of a slower start when it comes to baseball. However, he is quickly making up for lost time.

“I only had one practice before I was put into a game, so it was kind of tough right away,” Salfrank said. “But I think I’m really starting to get used to seeing pitching again, and reading fly balls and stuff like that.”

While the Smittys outscored Renner 33-7 combined in the two games, the hosts actually trailed in both contests.

Backous got out of a bases-loaded none-out jam by allowing just one run. He said the rainy conditions to start the twinbill did not help his cause.

“You know, I love Fossum. It’s my home, but that mound sucks when it rains. It really does,” Backous said. “It’s made of clay and the clay gets clumpy and it sticks to your feet, and your feet feel about 5 pounds-6 pounds heavier than what they normally are.”

There were no worries though as Aberdeen quickly erased that deficit on the way to a 10-run rule victory. The Smittys scored nine times in the second inning as Salfrank had a pair of run-producing doubles in the frame.

It was much the same in game two as the Smittys scored 11 times in the first and seven times in the second.

Backous and Phillip Zens each drove in a pair in the first inning, while Charlie Phillips, Jared Klootwyk, Donnie Soderlund each drove in one.

Meanwhile, Aberdeen pitchers competed with leads and the Smittys committed just one error in the two games.

“Our pitichers did a great job. They throw strikes and our defense is there to back them up,” Gonnelly said. “We’re really starting to play our brand of baseball right now, and it’s showing on the scoreboard, so it’s all good things.”

Zens finished with three hits and drove in four in the nightcap, while Phillips and Soderlund each knocked in three.

The Smittys, 9-3 on the young season, feature a blend of veterans and youth this summer.

“We’ve got everyone coming back. We’ve got some good young guys,” Salfrank said. “I think we could be a pretty good team.”

Aberdeen hosts Rapid City Post 320 for doubleheaders on Thursday evening and Friday afternoon.

“It’s just good to see live pitching and have fun with the game a little bit,” Gonnelly said. “We’re scoring a lot of runs, pitchers are throwing strikes, and our defense is backing them up. I mean that’s just baseball right there and we’ve been playing it pretty well.”
