PIERRE – The Aberdeen Smittys gave up just two runs, six total hits, and played error-free baseball to claim two more victories on Wednesday night. Aberdeen defeated Pierre 8-0 and 7-2 in American Legion action to run its current winning streak to six straight games.

“Pitching and defense were outstanding tonight,” said Smittys coach Nathan Gonnelly. “Grant Beyer threw 59 pitches and threw a complete game in game one. That’s unheard of. He did outstanding.”

Beyer gave up just one hit total, struck out three batters and did not walk anyone.

Zane Backous drove in a run with a double in the top of the first inning for all the offense Aberdeen would need. The Smittys added three runs in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk and hit batter, along with an error.

Aberdeen plated four more runs in the top of the seventh for the final margin of difference. Lance Siefken had an RBI double, Jaxon Ladner drove in a pair with a double, and Cooper Eisenbeisz contributed a run-scoring single.

Drew Salfrank had three hits in the win, while Backous and Ladner each finished with two.

The second game was closer as Aberdeen scored four times in the top of the second before Pierre cut the margin in half in the bottom of the frame. Brendan Livermont drove in the first run on a single, before Donnie Soderlund plated a pair with a single, and Salfrank added an RBI double.

The Smittys scored another run in the fifth when Backous doubled and scored on an error. Aberdeen tacked on two final runs in the seventh on an error and a Backous bases-loaded walk.

Backous and Talan Dutenhoeffer each had two hits.

Meanwhile, Ladner came on in relief and pitched five scoreless innings, scattering four hits, striking out three and walking just one.

Aberdeen again did not commit an error en route to securing the sweep.

“Our defense both games helped a ton,” Gonnelly said. “Both outfielders and infielders made some phenomenal plays. And to cap it off, our offense started a little slow, but finished very strong. Overall, great performance for the Smittys.”

Phillip Zens got a hit in each of the games and now has a 12-game hitting streak.

The Smittys are scheduled to play at Renner in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, before hosting Harrisburg Maroon on Saturday afternoon at Fossum Field.
