Englund lifts Groton past Faulkton-Highmore

CLARK – Gavin Englund delivered a bases-loaded single with none out in the bottom of the eighth inning as Groton walked off Faulkton-Highmore 5-1 in Region 6B American Legion baseball action on Wednesday night.

The two squads had gone seven scoreless innings during the pitchers’ dual before everything changed in the eighth.

Faulkton-Highmore broke through for the game’s first run when Layne Cotton doubled and scored on a double by Blaze Herdman.

Groton responded in the bottom of half of the inning. Colby Dunker, who has three walk-off hits this year to his own credit, tied the game when he singled in Brevin Fliehs.

After a walk loaded the bases, Englund provided the walk-off hit to send Groton into Friday’s championship contest. Englund went the distance on the mound, striking out five batters.

Dunker had two hits to lead Groton, while Cotton had a pair of hits for the Hitmen. Cotton pitched six strong innings striking out five and allowing just three hits.

Clark-Willow Lake 8, Mobridge 3

Clark-Willow Lake scored five times in the first inning to set the tone for its win to eliminate Mobridge.

Cooper Pommer had three hits, including a double to pace the offense for the Senators. Jack Helkenn had a pair of doubles, one that drove in a run in the third inning. Jakob Steen and Connor Mudgett also had two hits, including RBI singles for C-WL.

Gavin Farlee had an run-producing single, and Mack Saxon stole home for Mobridge.

Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern 13, Claremont Honkers 2

Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern received hits from eight different players, and also RBI from eight different players on the way to eliminating Claremont 13-2.

The Honkers scored the first two runs of the game, one on a single by Chris Cutler. But it was all W-I-N after that.

W-I-N scored five times in the third inning and five times in the fifth.

Ashton Remily had two hits and drove in a pair, while Chays Mansfield also plated two runs.

Brayden Kroll gave up just two hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter in going the distance for the pitching victory.
