Groton, Lake Norden-Badger headed to State B tourney

CLARK – Groton and Lake Norden-Badger both punched their tickets to the State B American Legion Baseball Tournament in Salem next week with late-game heroics on Friday evening.

Groton scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to surge past Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern 7-4 in the Region 6B championship game.

Brevin Fliehs broke a 4-4 tie with an RBI single, before Colby Dunker drove in a pair with two-out a double.

The two squads traded two-run innings in the first. W-I-N scored on a ground out and an RBI single by Sam Vetter. Groton received an a run-producing single from Bradin Althoff and an RBI double from Dunker. The two squads each scored two more runs, setting up the pivotal inning for Groton.

Fliehs and Dunker each had two hits, for Groton, which beat W-I-N for the fifth time this season. Dunker finished with three runs batted in. Fliehs struck out seven batters in six innings on the mound.

Alec Mikkelson, who drove in a run in the fourth, and Vetter, each had two hits for Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern.

Lake Norden-Badger 7, Alexandria 5

ALEXANDRIA – Turner Stevenson slugged a two-run walk-off home run to lift Lake Norden-Badger past Alexandria 7-5 in the Region 5B championship.

After one out, Cristhian Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and Stevenson took an 0-1 pitch and deposited over the rightfield fence for the game-winner.

After Alexandria opened the game with two runs, LN-B responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. Rodriguez, Stevenson, and Ryker Warrington each had RBI singles and another run came in on a error.

Alexandria tied the game at 4-4 before an error led to another Lake Norden-Badger run in the fourth. Alexandria once again tied the game in the fifth inning setting the stage for Stevenson’s game-winning home run.

Stevenson finished three hits and three RBI to power the victory.

Big Stone City 6, Milbank 1

CASTLEWOOD – Big Stone City scored five runs in the first inning to fuel a 6-1 win over Milbank in the Region 1B championship contest.

Big Stone City had five of its sixth hits in the frame, led by Carter Lee’s two-run single.

Milbank’s lone run came in on a ground out in the sixth inning.

Mason Meister had three hits to pace Milbank.
