MILBANK – Groton scored early and often on the way to an American Legion baseball twinbill sweep over Milbank on Tuesday night. Groton won the first game 12-9 before taking the nightcap 11-1.
The visitors scored all of those runs in a total of just five innings.
Groton plated four runs in the top of the first inning of the opener as Bradin Althoff had a bases-loaded double and scored on Ryan Groeblinghoff’s single.
Colby Dunker and Groeblinghoff had RBI hits in a three-run third, and Braxton Imrie highlighted a five-run fourth inning with a two-run single.
Milbank made things interesting with four runs in the seventh, and had the trying-run at the plate when the game ended.
Groeblinghoff had four hits and drove in two, while Althoff had two hits and knocked in four for Groton.
Milbank’s Reece Rabe had the rare accomplishment of driving in three runs without a hit, thanks to a pair of bases-loaded walks and a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
Groton dominated the second contest with six runs in the second inning and five runs in third.
Dillon Abeln drove in the first two runs in the second, followed by RBI hits from Althoff and Dunker. One inning later, Althoff had his second bases-loaded double of the night, and then scored on a double by Dunker.
