Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of July 7-13:

Last year on July 12, 2023: A Webster native and former standout NSU quarterback shared an ESPY award with his teammates. Buffalo Bills head trainer Nate Breske accepted the Pat Tillman Award in Los Angeles on behalf of his staff and the many others who helped save the life of Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin after he went into cardiac arrest on the field during a game in Cincinnati on Jan. 2. Hamlin, who is planning to return this season after a nine-day hospital stay, fought through tears to announce the honor.

10 years ago on July 8, 2014: Jason Aldean impacted a South Dakota high school football game. The country singer will be the first major act to play the Denny Sanford Premier Center on Oct. 3, which is when Washington High was scheduled to host Huron in football action at neighboring Howard Wood Field. In order to clear the way for the Premier Center’s grand opening concert and minimize parking concerns, the Washington-Huron game was moved to Oct. 2.

20 years ago on July 11, 2004: Former USD standout Derek Miles, 31, earned his first Olympic berth. He finished third in the pole vault at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento.

30 years ago on July 9, 1994: Last week’s amateur baseball scene in South Dakota produced a couple of bizarre results. On July 3, Lake Norden hit eight home runs in a 24-3 win over visiting Clear Lake. Paul Raasch led Lake Norden by scoring four runs and driving in six with three homers and a single. On July 4 in Redfield, the home Dairy Queen team and Webster were still tied 6-6 after 11 innings. It was about 11 p.m., and fans who came to see the fireworks display after the game were getting tired of waiting. So the
teams agreed to end the game and call it a tie. “The fireworks were great,” said Redfield manager Kurt Permann.

40 years ago on July 7, 1984: Williston, N.D., native Virgil Hill qualified for the U.S. Olympic boxing team (he went on to win a silver medal at 165 pounds at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics). Hill was a five-time world champion who was 288-11 as an amateur and 51-7 as a pro. Hill brought many of his fights back to his home state of North Dakota and he is known for promoting his Native American heritage and for his work with youth, especially across reservations in North Dakota and South Dakota.

50 years ago on July 13, 1974: Former Huron standout Jeff Morgan will open fall camp with his Nebraska teammates as the Cornhuskers’ No. 1 running back.
