It’s not often you get multiple chances to win a feature race, but a pair of drivers took advantage of their opportunities at Brown County Speedway, Aberdeen Friday night.
Josh Skorczewski of Aberdeen, and Justin Vogel of Brooten, Minn., both found a way to capture feature victories during the first night of the Dacotah Rumble.
In the case of Skorczewski, he caught multiple breaks during the Late Model feature. Starting on the pole position, he grabbed an early lead, only to lose it Matt Gilbertson of Montevideo, Minn. Gilbertson opened a big lead, before colliding with a lap-traffic car.
That returned the lead to Skorczewski, who was eventually passed by Dustin Strand of East Grand Forks, Minn. However, Strand soon collided with a lap-traffic car as well, and Skorcewski got his lead back again. The Aberdeen driver appeared to be in good shape, before getting passed by Mike Greseth of Harwood, N.D. However, a yellow flag returned the action to the previous lap, once again restoring the lead to Skorczewski who was able to finish off the race from there for a remarkable win.

“We had a couple of good starts and they kept getting them restarts there and those other guys kind of got a jump on me,” Skorczewski said. “Both of them had bad luck, which put me back in the lead, and then a timely yellow there with two to go put me back in the lead. It all worked out.”
Skorczewski said that he has a little work to do before tonight’s racing program, but he has also now won back-to-back features at the track.
“We have some things to work on for (Saturday) night, to make the car a little bit better,” Skorczewski said, “but it always helps to start up front and be able to kind of move it around, and I’ll figure out what the fastest line is, which also is hard to do when guys are surging behind you.”
In the end, it was Skorczewski’s patience and perseverance with lap-traffic cars that played a key role in the 30-lap victory.
“They can kind of be hard to get around, so you kind of have to be patient and pick the right times,” Skorczewski said. “The other two leaders didn’t really do that and I just kind of bided my time.”
It has been quite a week for Skorczewski, who’s wife gave birth to a baby girl on Tuesday.
“Had baby girl on Tuesday,” he said, “had a pretty crazy feature again this week, like we did last week.”
How do you top that?
“Winning (Saturday) night,” he said.

While Vogel’s win wasn’t quite as dramatic, it was just as suspenseful.
Vogel grabbed a lead by running on the high side of the track and maintained it until he also encountered lap traffic.
“I wasn’t sure if that top was going to hold and I just let ‘er buck up there,” Vogel said. “It was a lot of fun. It was a little greasy right away before we started the race, and it must have came in a little bit.”
However, lap traffic played a role as Vogel soon needed to find a way around the slower cars, and in the process, lost his lead to Kyle Bertram of Dallas, S.D.
Vogel didn’t trail for long though. He somehow found his way back in front of Bertram, even thought he couldn’t remember how.
“I just got lucky. It’s kind of blur right now,” Vogel said. “I can’t really remember how I got back by him. I think it got by him up top. I pretty much just didn’t lift up there.”

While the lap traffic almost cost him the race, Vogel said he enjoys the challenge of working his way through the field.
“It’s a blast. I love it. I love when we get into lap traffic. It makes you work for it,” Vogel said. “It was kind of a one-laner to begin with, but once you start catching lap traffic, you’ve got to start moving around and that makes it fun.”
Vogel was grateful that there were multiple lanes of racing, which made navigating through lap traffic a bit easier.
“The track was awesome. I love to see they left the middle alone so it’d slick off,” he said. “We had a top and a bottom. That’s what every racer, every fan dreams for, so it was good.”
The second night of the Dacotah Rumble takes place tonight at 7 with a complete new show.
