HURON – It was a tale of two games for the Aberdeen Smittys in American Legion baseball Tuesday night.

The Smittys dominated the first game of a doubleheader against Huron, winning 16-1. However, the hosts ended up walking off with a 6-5 win with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in the second contest.

Aberdeen scored in all five innings of the opener, breaking the game open with a nine-run fourth inning.

The Smittys got going in the top of the first when Zane Backous tripled and came home on a single by Casey Vining.

The visitors scored three two-out runs in the second, two coming in on a double by Cooper Eisenbeisz. After an RBI single from Donnie Soderlund in the third, the Smittys put the game out of reach in the fourth. Vining had a two-run single to start the uprising and an RBI single to cap it. In between, Joran Foss, Soderlund, and Drew Salfrank each drove in a run, and Eisenbeisz added a second two-run double.

Aberdeen capped the scoring with a pair of runs in the fifth as Soderlund and Talan Dutenhoeffer each drove in runs.

Eisenbeisz finished with four hits, and four RBI. Vining contributed three hits and knocked in four. Salfrank added three hits, Foss had three hits and scored four times, and Soderlund had a pair of hits and drove in three.

The second game was a much different story.

Aberdeen led 4-1 early in the contest, scoring once in the first on a wild pitch, once in the third on Vining’s RBI single, and twice in the fourth as Jared Klootwyk and Backous drove in runs.

However, Huron hung around and trailed 4-2 before Backous drove in another run in the sixth. The hosts then sliced the margin to 5-4 before the crucial bottom of the seventh inning.

After two outs, Huron loaded the bases and then tied the game on a walk, and scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

Eisenbeisz and Klootwyk each had a pair of hits for Aberdeen.

The Smittys are now off to the Twin Cities where they will play at least five games Friday through Sunday during the Gopher Classic, which will feature teams from multiple states.

Aberdeen coach Nathan Gonnelly talked about the event following Monday’s game at Fossum Field.

“I actually played in the Gopher when I played high school ball. I’m pretty familiar with the Gopher,” Gonnelly said. “We’re going to see some good competition and it’s just going to be a fun road trip.”
