MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Lance Siefken delivered a two-run single with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Aberdeen Smittys walked off Apple Valley 7-6 in American Legion baseball action Saturday at the Gopher Classic. The Smittys were blanked by Fargo, N.D., 5-0 in their second game.
Aberdeen played from behind most of the day. Apple Valley scored two runs in the top of the first inning. The Smittys tied the score in the bottom of the second on Drew Salfrank’s two-run single.
The Minnesota squad jumped back in front with a run in the third and two more in the fourth for a 5-2 lead.
The Smittys closed the gap in the bottom of the fourth on Cooper Eisenbeisz’s RBI single, and knotted the score in the fifth, scoring runs on a fielder’s choice and an RBI hit by Salfrank.
Apple Valley scored a run in the top of the sixth, setting the stage for Siefken’s game-winning hit in the bottom half of the inning, plating Casey Vining and Phillip Zens.
The Smittys received three hits from Zens, and two apiece from Salfrank, Joran Foss and Siefken. Salfrank and Siefken each drove in three runs, while Zens scored three times.
Aberdeen managed just one hit against Fargo, a two-out single by Talan Dutenhoeffer in the third inning. The Smittys struck out nine times in the contest.
The North Dakota squad scored all five of its runs in the third inning when it had four of its seven hits.
The Smittys will face Waconia at 7 tonight in the Gopher Classic.
