GROTON – Watertown set the tone for the night with nine runs in its first at-bat on the way to an American Legion baseball doubleheader sweep over Groton Tuesday night.
Watertown won the opening game 16-2 to snap Groton’s six-game winning streak, before edging the hosts 7-5 in the nightcap.
The visitors scored eight two-out runs in the opening frame of the first game. Watertown had nine of its 16 hits in the inning.
Groton responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first. Brevin Fliehs tripled and scored on a double by Bradin Althoff, who later came in on a Carter Simon single.
However, the hosts were unable to put any more runs on the board the rest of the way.
Watertown put Groton in an early hole in the second game as well with a run in the first, two in the second and another in the third. The visitors added three more runs in the fifth before Groton rallied with four runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh.
Ryan Groeblinghoff, Carter Simon and Jarrett Erdmann each drove in runs with bases-loaded walks in the sixth. Althoff doubled in a run in the seventh, but the rally came up just short.
Fliehs finished with two hits to lead Groton.
