BROOKINGS – Aberdeen Central claimed two out of three girls’ tennis matches on day one of the Brookings Jamboree on Friday.

The Golden Eagles opened the day with a sweep of Brookings, then defeated Harrisburg 6-3 in the second match of the day before dropping a 5-4 decision to Yankton to end the day against the Eastern South Dakota Conference opponents.

Central’s opening sweep of the host Bobcats featured decisive wins up and down the lineup. All six flights of singles and all three doubles flights didn’t give up more than two games.

That domination changed in the Harrisburg match. Central needed a rally at flight one doubles, as Julia Knie and Avery Tennant were down 7-4 before fighting back for a 10-7 win. Knie also needed a tiebreaker in her singles match to defeat Harrisburg’s McKenzie Vickery.

“Julia had to battle back from being down 6-9 to force the breaker,” said Central coach John Vogel.

Central had a chance to earn a third victory against Yankton, but couldn’t pull off a second doubles win to secure it after splitting the singles matches.

“Threes won and twos lost, so it all depended on ones (Knie and Tennant),” Vogel said. “They played valiantly, but Yankton took us 10-7.”

Central will wrap up its two-day stay in Brookings with a pair of matches against Huron and Watertown on Saturday.

“We look forward to more ESD action (Saturday),” Vogel said.
