BROOKINGS – Aberdeen Central had its best start in three games so far this season on the way to a 2-0 boys’ soccer victory on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles, who had struggled early in games this season, were ready to go for the Eastern South Dakota Conference matchup.

“They came out and we played really, really well for the first 20 minutes of the game,” said Central coach Lance Mohr.

The Eagles possessed the ball for the majority of the game, preventing the Bobcats from access to many scoring opportunities.

“We had the majority of the ball, especially in the second half, that allowed us to kind of control the tempo of the game,” Mohr said, “and ultimately we limited their chances because of that.”

Central scored goals midway through each half in the contest. Gavin Yost produced the first score at about the 20-minute mark, and Linus Johnson found the back of the net at about the 60-minute mark.

Yost and Johnson always seem to be around the action for the Golden Eagles.

“That’s alright, they can stay there,” Mohr said. “That works for me.”

Again, it was the start that helped Central to set the tone early and eventually produce the victory.

“It was nice to have a good solid start,” Mohr said, “and we were able to maintain that flow and our rhythm in the game for almost all of it.”

The Eagles improved to 2-0-1 on the season.

“Great game, the effort and attitude are fantastic from everybody,” Mohr said, “so good solid win.”

Central hosts Harrisburg at 4 p.m. Tuesday, before heading west to face Rapid City Central on Friday, and Rapid City Stevens on Saturday.
