PIERRE – Aberdeen Central picked up a pair of victories during the final day of action in a tennis tournament in Pierre on Saturday. The Golden Eagles blanked Rapid City Central 9-0, before stopping Rapid City Christian 6-3.

Central lost just three of the 18 matches on the day, and two of those came via tiebreakers.

“Rapid City Christian was a great way to end it,” said Central coach John Vogel, “once again it would’ve been better if we won the tiebreakers.”

The Eagles, who lost a few tiebreakers on Friday as well, played solid throughout the day on the way to improving to 3-1 on the season.

“The breakers ended our day, but we had a great beginning by taking two of the three dubs before moving to singles,” Vogel said.

Vogel was particularly impressed by the play of Julia Knie, who beat a solid foe from Rapid City Christian 10-4.

“Julia Knie’s performance at flight one singles was exquisite!” Vogel said. “Her opponent was hitting bomb after bomb, but Julia matched her and then some. It was the best I’ve seen her play.”

Avery Tennant won a tight match at second flight singles, pulling out a 10-8 victory.

“Avery pulled out a hard-fought match with both girls being exhausted,” Vogel said.

Central lost a pair of tiebreakers against Christian with Reese Comstock falling 7-5 at flight three, and Ashley Ortega coming up short 7-3 at flight six.

“Reese fell down 0-5 before turning it around, while Ashley’s match was a nailbiter from the start,” Vogel said. “Both girls played well, but so did their opponents. Hats off to them.”

Central has another busy weekend coming up with matches Friday and Saturday in Sioux Falls.
